Robert Hass’s poetry has been described as being “rooted in California history and ecology.” In this California Book Club clip, Hass muses on his family’s Sunday excursions—from San Rafael through the rolling hills and rocky ocean ledges of Marin County and across the Golden Gate Bridge—to visit his grandparents in San Francisco. He explains that at a young age, it was terrain that fueled his imagination, terrain that New York and Boston publishers did not include in children’s books of the time.•
