In this California Book Club clip, Cherríe Moraga reflects on how challenging it is to write about family without feeling like one is hurting or betraying the people in the story. How can one be completely open if the truth is ugly? Moraga acknowledges that it is a constant battle, but advises that pretending the writing is never going to be published can be a helpful mindset for overcoming this “hard road.” Moraga also communicates that, despite it feeling dangerous, if the truth is able to repair damage, it’s the responsibility of the writer to share it.•
