Four Alta Journal illustrators have had their works chosen by the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles to be shown in the organization’s Illustration West 61 exhibit (likely online) in spring 2023.

Among the honorees chosen from the pool of 1,400 entries were Mark Smith, for images accompanying two stories, “Evel Knievel, Astronaut,” by Adam Fisher, and “She Has a Name,” by Louise Farr; Philip Burke, for an illustration of Joan Didion for Issue 19’s special package devoted to the writer; and Steve Carroll, for two images illustrating the story “When Mark Twain Canceled Bret Harte,” by Joy Lanzendorfer.

Thomas Ehretsmann was honored for three illustrations: one of M.F.K. Fisher for “She Was Not a Food Writer,” by Jim Lewis, and two for “‘The Ways of Fiction Are Devious Indeed,’” by Sands Hall.•
