Yields:
1
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 2 oz.
whiskey (preferably from a California distillery)
- 1 Tbsp.
fig jam
A pinch of Chinese five-spice powder (typically made with star anise, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, fennel seeds, and Sichuan peppercorns)
Flamed orange twist
Directions
- Step 1In a mixing glass, stir the jam and Chinese five-spice powder until smooth.
- Step 2Stir in the whiskey, then add ice and stir again until well chilled.
- Step 3Next, double strain into a rocks glass with a large ice cube: Use a cocktail strainer fitted over the mixing glass and a fine-mesh strainer or sieve held directly over the serving glass to catch the tiny fig seeds.
- Step 4Garnish with a flamed or plain orange twist (see instructions below).
How to Flame an Orange Twist
- Step 1Flamed twists release their oils beautifully and add a smoky note to your drink. First, peel off a strip or round “coin” of the orange’s skin that’s at least an inch wide. It’s OK if you gather some pith.
- Step 2Next, light a match and hold it a few inches above your serving glass. Warm the orange side of the peel over the flame.
- Step 3Squeeze to release the citrus oil directly onto the drink. You’ll notice a smoky orange aroma. If you scorch the peel, start over.
- Step 4Rub the garnish around the rim of the serving glass and drop it into the drink.
