With reporting from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance, Alta Journal brings you a list of the bestselling titles at independent bookstores across Northern and Southern California for the week ending April 28, 2024.

This week’s bestsellers list features two authors in Alta’s orbit. Topping the charts is California Book Club contributor Rosecrans Baldwin’s deeply reported 2021 book, Everything Now: Lessons from the City-State of Los Angeles. Using interviews with notorious Angelenos and analysis of classic L.A. literature, this California Book Award–winning title identifies everything we’ve gotten wrong about the “Great American City-State.” Speaking of the classics: Alta’s 2022 cover star Joan Didion returns to the list with her essential novel Play It As It Lays. The late writer’s descriptions of Las Vegas and Hollywood in the 1960s will spark nostalgia in even the youngest Didion reader.
