With reporting from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance, Alta Journal brings you a list of the bestselling titles at independent bookstores across Northern and Southern California for the week ending January 26, 2025.

This week’s list includes two popular titles. First is Onyx Storm, the latest installment in Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series. After 18 months at Basgiath War College, a brutal military academy, Violet Sorrengail heads into unfamiliar lands to gather allies for the battle ahead—one that will determine the fate of those she loves. Also featured is Margaret Atwood’s classic The Handmaid’s Tale. In this dystopian novel, a totalitarian regime enforces rigid social roles, stripping women of their autonomy. Offred, a Handmaid, is forced to bear children for one of the regime’s commanders, her identity and past erased as she struggles to hold on to her memories of her previous life.
