With reporting from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance, Alta Journal brings you a list of the bestselling titles at independent bookstores across Northern and Southern California for the week ending October 30, 2022.
On the list this week is the paperback edition of Rebecca Solnit’s Orwell’s Roses, a fresh exploration of politics and gardening by the California Book Club’s September 2021 author. Solnit examines George Orwell’s life in a new light, from his lesser-known journeys deep in the coal mines of England to his involvement with horticulture. The Passenger, by Cormac McCarthy, reviewed by Alta, is a thrilling new addition to the list. The novel—the first of two related volumes— follows Bobby Western as he explores the sunken wreckage of a plane and investigates a possible government cover-up.
