With reporting from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance, Alta Journal brings you a list of the bestselling titles at independent bookstores across Northern and Southern California for the week ending May 28, 2023.

California Book Club author Héctor Tobar appears on the list this week with his recently published work, Our Migrant Souls: A Meditation on Race and the Meanings and Myths of “Latino.” Looking back at his history as the offspring of Guatemalan immigrants, and on anecdotes he picked up from Latinx students, Tobar seeks to unravel the word “Latino” and its connotations in the United States. The Covenant of Water, by Palo Alto–based author Abraham Verghese, is on the list again this week. The novel follows three generations of a family plagued by a particular curse: in each passing generation, at least one person dies by drowning.
