With reporting from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance, Alta Journal brings you a list of the bestselling titles at independent bookstores across Northern and Southern California for the week ending May 19, 2024.
Two new books featuring strong female subjects debut on the list this week. Miranda July (the California Book Club’s May 2022 special guest) explores menopause, parenting, and female sexuality in the novel All Fours, in which an unnamed narrator rediscovers herself on a two-week trip that helps separate her from her roles as a wife and mother. Musician Kathleen Hanna’s memoir, Rebel Girl: My Life As a Feminist Punk, touches on similar themes. Hanna talks candidly about her childhood and college experiences, including early shows with her band Bikini Kill. She recounts the challenges of being a “rebel girl” as well as her journey with Lyme disease, and how she channeled those hardships into her art and music.
