With reporting from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance, Alta Journal brings you a list of the bestselling titles at independent bookstores across Northern and Southern California for the week ending August 25, 2024.

This week’s titles include two books with California ties. First up is The Book of Bill, by Bay Area native Alex Hirsch, the creator of the animated TV show Gravity Falls. Fans of the series will recognize the book’s narrator, Bill Cipher—the villain from the fictional town of Gravity Falls—who shares his bizarre origin story through journal entries, riddles, and ciphers. And in her fiction debut, The Golden Gate, author Amy Chua captures the political tensions and social dynamics of the city of Berkeley in the 1940s. After a presidential hopeful is murdered, it’s up to detective Al Sullivan to piece the case together.
