With reporting from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance, Alta Journal brings you a list of the bestselling titles at independent bookstores across Northern and Southern California for the week ending March 23, 2025.

Two bestsellers on this week’s list tell supernatural stories in completely original ways. First up is The Antidote, by Karen Russell, in which residents are grappling with the aftermath of a historic dust storm in the fictional town of Uz, Nebraska. Survivors include a witch who helps her neighbors by absorbing their unwanted memories, a cursed wheat farmer, and a New Deal photographer with a time-traveling camera. In the novel The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, by Stephen Graham Jones, the discovery of a hidden diary unearths the chilling tale of a vampire roaming the fields of the Blackfeet reservation in Montana to avenge the 217 Indigenous people who were murdered there.
