Grande puts a human face on the fraught issue of immigration in her acclaimed memoir. At age nine, Grande leaves Mexico as an undocumented immigrant to join her father in the United States—El Otro Lado, or “the other side.” The pursuit of happiness is elusive and filled with tragedy, but Grande finds her own path, becoming the first person in her family to go to college. A 2012 National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, The Distance Between Us has been selected by many citywide reading programs throughout the U.S.
