We know you’ve noticed—the photographs and illustrations commissioned by Alta Journal are captivating. We’re delighted to report that experts and competition jurists have noticed as well.

The first of Melinda Beck’s riveting illustrations for Tod Goldberg’s essay “At the Knee” was accepted into the Society of Illustrators 68th exhibition and book. The art was on exhibit at the Society of Illustrators in New York City from the end of March to early May.

Carolyn Fong’s portrait of Lee Mingwei was included in American Photography 41, a 2025 collection of the best photographs as selected by AI-AP. Says Fong, “I always enjoy working with [creative director] John Goecke at Alta because of his trust and the creative freedom that he allows so that I’m able to create images that tell the story of a very interesting and cool person without being pigeonholed into creating one specific kind of image. I’m free to explore and create based on the collaboration with the subject on the day of the project. And that trust and freedom leads to the ability to create images that apparently lead to winning awards, which I’m forever grateful for.”

Artist Zoe Matthiessen’s colorful painting for Denise Hamilton’s article on the plight of the Blenheim apricot made it into American Illustration 44. “It was a delight to splish and splash my way through this illustration assignment for Alta Journal,” quipped Matthiessen. “During the process, I developed an unusual craving for apricots, and, though I have not yet experienced the thrill of tasting an actual Blenheim, it’s an honor to have this painting awarded by the jurors of American Illustration!”

“Working with artists, illustrators, and photographers is my favorite part of this job,” says Goecke. “I’m delighted to see Carolyn, Zoe, and Melinda get recognition for their wonderful work and am proud to include it in the pages of Alta.”
